That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.
Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We clean and restore Aprilaire registers and grilles throughout Houston, and most jobs run $85 to $165 when the registers are removed, hand-washed, and the surrounding frame and boot are vacuumed out before everything is reinstalled. If the register itself has failed (bent louvers, broken damper, cracked plastic from years of Houston sun through a window), we replace it with a new Aprilaire-compatible register at the same visit. Most owners notice the problem when one room stays warmer than the rest of the house, or when the register won’t sit flush in the floor anymore because the damper blade underneath has come loose.
Which Aprilaire Models This Applies To
Aprilaire registers and grilles aren’t model-specific the way a humidifier pad or a thermostat is, but they do come in three physical sizes used across Houston homes: 4×10, 4×12, and 6×12 for wall registers, plus 12×12 and 14×6 for larger ceiling and return grilles. The brand stamp is usually molded into the back of the register face or stamped on the damper blade, so if you flip the register over and see “Aprilaire” in small letters, you’ve got an original. Most Aprilaire-branded registers we see in Houston are paired with Aprilaire air cleaners, Aprilaire dehumidifiers, or Aprilaire whole-home ventilation systems installed by HVAC contractors in the last 10 to 15 years.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people hit: the Aprilaire register may look like any other big-box register, but the damper blade pitch and the depth of the mounting collar are often off by a quarter-inch from generic aftermarket versions. That means a cheap replacement from a hardware store sits proud of the floor or drops too far into the boot, which lets conditioned air leak into the wall cavity instead of the room. We keep Aprilaire-compatible registers on the truck in all three common sizes, and when the original is too far gone to clean, we match the exact color and louver style so the room doesn’t have one odd register that stands out from the rest. We also carry register and grille parts for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems, since plenty of Houston homes have mixed equipment.

Signs Your Aprilaire Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
- Dust streaks on the ceiling or wall around the register. This is usually a register that has come loose from the boot or a boot collar that was never sealed properly. Air escapes around the frame instead of through it, and the escaping air picks up dust and rubs it into the drywall. A proper cleaning and reseal stops the streaking at the source, not just the surface.
- One room that never cools like the others. Sometimes the issue is the register itself: the damper blade has closed or jammed partway due to years of pet hair and Houston humidity, so supply air can’t get through the grille. We’ve pulled registers in the Heights where the damper was entirely gummed shut and the owner had simply given up on that room.
- The register won’t sit flush or rattles when the system runs. Damper levers break, the little metal stops wear out, or the register frame gets stepped on one too many times. Once the frame is bent, no amount of cleaning will fix it, and a replacement is the honest answer.
- Visible mold or mildew on the back of the register. Houston’s humidity means condensation forms on cold register faces, especially in rooms closed off from airflow. If the back of a metal register shows dark spotting and the room smells musty when the air runs, the register and the boot behind it need to be cleaned and treated, not just wiped down from the front.
- Pets and small toys keep finding their way down the boot. If you’ve fished a Barbie or a tennis ball out of a floor register more than once, that register has probably lost its under-blade damper or the backside screen. We see this most often in Houston homes with kids and dogs, and the fix is usually a new register with the proper backing.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what to plan for in the Houston market, in plain dollars. A full register and grille cleaning, where we remove each register, hand-wash it, vacuum the boot behind it to six to eight inches, and reseal the frame, typically runs $85 to $165 for a home with 6 to 12 registers. If a few registers are beyond saving, a new Aprilaire-compatible register runs $18 to $45 each depending on size and finish, installed as part of the same visit. What moves the total is how many registers need replacing and whether any boots are so far out of alignment that we need to build them back up to sit flush.
The written price is what you pay. Every job gets a flat price before a single panel comes off, and that includes the shoe covers, the drop cloths, and the photo of the finished register line before we leave. Paul Adeyemi grew up working carefully, and that’s how we run every visit: one register at a time, done right, then on to the next.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things a Houston homeowner can safely do before picking up the phone. You can vacuum the face of a metal register with a brush attachment. You can wipe down the surface with a damp rag and let it dry. You can check whether the damper lever moves when you turn the little wheel or slide the bar. But once the register is out of the boot, two things go wrong for most people. First, older Aprilaire registers are brittle from years of heat and UV, and the plastic mounting clips snap when you pry them the wrong way, which turns a cleaning into a replacement. Second, the boot behind the register is part of your system’s airflow balance, and poking a shop vac down there without knowing what you’re hitting can knock the boot loose from the duct or shred old flex duct lining.
If a register is cracked, won’t close, or the room has never cooled right, call us at (940) 314-5008. We’ll come out, assess what’s actually wrong, and give you a written price before we start. No surprise invoice, no scrambling.
FAQs
Every two to three years is right for most Houston homes, though we recommend once a year in homes with shedding dogs, cats, or construction nearby. Register faces collect dust, pet hair, and the fine gray film that blows in from our humidity, and if you can see buildup on the face, the backside is usually worse because that’s where the airflow is fastest. Call (940) 314-5008 and we can tell you whether your system needs it yet or not.
Sometimes. If the damper lever is just stiff or the louver blades are bent but intact, we can often free it up, straighten it, and re-lubricate the pivot points. But cracked plastic frames, broken mounting clips, and stripped damper mechanisms aren’t worth repairing, because the labor to fiddle with them costs more than a new Aprilaire-compatible register. We’ll tell you which camp yours falls into, honestly, before you spend a dollar.
Most homes with 6 to 12 registers take 45 to 90 minutes from start to finish. We work room by room, and we’re used to timing the noisy parts around nap schedules when a baby is down. The photo of the clean-up at the end lets you see exactly what was done in every room before we leave.
We stock Aprilaire-compatible registers and grilles on the truck in 4×10, 4×12, 6×12, 12×12, and 14×6 sizes, plus the common replacement damper blades and mounting clips. If your system needs an uncommon size, we can usually source it within a day or two from our supplier network in Houston. Call (940) 314-5008 with your measurements and we’ll tell you if it’s on the truck today.
